Mercury retrograde in Scorpio; plunging ever deeper

Mercury went retrograde in Scorpio on October 31st (just to add to the intensity of that particular date!) and continues to move apparently backwards until November 19th. This retrograde period in Scorpio continues the current cycle of Mercury retro in the water signs, which will flow for another year, shifting to the air signs towards the end of 2020. Just like the Mercury retrogrades in Pisces and Cancer so far this year, Mercury retrograde in Scorpio asks us to dig deep into our emotional selves. With Scorpio, there is more likely to be a focus on how we relate to others, how we form close and lasting relationships and the emotional responses those relationships trigger for us.
Still waters gather the lost
In Scorpio, Mercury is secretive, looking for hidden agendas and what lies beneath the surface. Issues around control and power may be coming into focus, always with the risk that we may try to bury them even deeper. But Mercury retro in Scorpio is here to show us the consequences of repressed emotions and buried feelings, the way these energies can stifle our growth and hold us back. The overall dynamic of the Mercury retro in the water signs cycle is bringing an awareness of how our unconscious selves affect our conscious awareness and our everyday lives. Intimacy issues, emotional insecurities, fear of being vulnerable or feeling threatened, all of these may arise during this Mercury retrograde. So many of our emotional responses are conditioned at a very young age, by our environment and the apparent expectations of those around us. These conditioned responses tend to be most visible in our closest relationships and the emotional connections we form with the people who mean the most to us. Mercury retrograde in Scorpio pulls us deep into the source of these responses and asks us to examine them, to acknowledge their power. Are we taking responsibility for our own emotional needs, in relationships and more generally, or are we projecting them onto others? This retrograde phase takes us deep into our shadow selves and we may need to take ownership of the parts of ourselves we would prefer to avoid.

Boundaries may be shifting or falling away with this retrograde phase, especially if those boundaries have become too rigid. We may be feeling extra sensitive and vulnerable as if all our most tender parts are suddenly exposed. The veil is already thin at this time of year and Mercury retrograde in Scorpio may thin it even further. Whatever is coming up for us at this time, whether it manifests as a practical matter, an emotional issue or something else entirely, has its roots in our deepest self and perhaps our distant past. Some reflection and inner work may be needed to reach back to the source of the energy. Luckily Mercury retrograde in Scorpio gives us the power and resources we need to make this foray into the unconscious. In the coming weeks, we are plunging into the still pools and submerged feelings at the heart of ourselves, seeking understanding and buried treasure.
