Sun into Gemini; breathing into the questions
When I sat down to write about Gemini season (late, because teaching commitments have stolen my brain), I thought I didn’t have much to say. Then I wrote two sides of A4 without really thinking about it. So I guess it’s that kind of Gemini season… It’s certainly set to be an intense one, with Mercury retrograde in Gemini from May 29th and a couple of eclipses for good measure. I’d love to see this as a seed point for some deep thinking, some reflection and contemplation and honest observation. On what’s happened over the last year and a half, on what we can learn, on how we can come back better. Last Gemini season no one could breathe - George Floyd least of all and all those who have always been stifled by the system, and then many more of us locked down and anxious and angry. Lockdown cleared enough space in enough minds for us to see more clearly all the imbalances, all the injustices and for us white folk, our own role in perpetuating these. Lots of difficult thoughts, lots of difficult awareness and none of that has gone away. We are still working through all that baggage, we need to be still working through all that baggage.
During Gemini season this year, we get a second hit of Saturn square Uranus - doing the work, manifesting change, committing to making that change real and lasting. Gemini season, especially once Mercury turns retrograde from May 29th, is the perfect time to check in with our thinking - how are we doing at dismantling outdated thought structures, personally and collectively? What needs to open up so that we can all breathe more freely, especially those who have been stifled for so long? Venus and Mercury meet in Gemini that same day, reminding us of the power of loving connection.
Gemini is all about dialogue, about sharing ideas and exchanging information and learning from each other. The Sun and the North Node meet in Gemini on June 1st, reminding us to step out of our comfort zones, to seek growth and new knowledge. We are called to dialogue with ourselves as well as with each other, to question ourselves and the world around us. and to embrace difference and uncertainty and diversity as necessary and powerful and interesting.
Of course, even as we ask questions, it’s important that we ask the right questions. Like a good astrology or tarot reading, often the answers we get are only as good as the question we asked in the first place. Gemini season also brings a reminder of how malleable information is, how easily manipulated, not to mention how easy it is to simply accept the truth we are given. We might allow the lunar eclipse in Sagittarius on May 26th to be a call to honour all kinds of questions, all kinds of truth - and to practise discernment in reaching them and acting from them.
