Monthly Astro-Forecast: New Moon in Gemini
The new moon in Gemini, on 3 June here in the UK, brings a seed point of communicative, airy energy. Gemini energy is about information and about exchange, about the ideas that we share and how we perceive and understand the world around us. We connect literally with the air as we breathe and we take in and give back out ideas as well. Gemini asks us to look at what we are absorbing from the world around us, consciously but also unconsciously. Likewise, we may find ourselves considering the energy we give out to the world, the self that we show or project to others. Gemini is the sign of the twins and shows us what others reflect back to us as well as what we give to them.
As the sign of mutable air, Gemini energy tends to be outwardly focused and extroverted, relying on others and on the world around us for stimulation. We may be absorbing information without questioning its value, without processing it or incorporating it into what we already know. Gemini can sometimes symbolise knowledge without wisdom. We take in an excess of data but lack context, meaning or application for it. Those with strong Gemini energy tend to have a love of knowledge for its own sake, a curiosity to learn about the world just because they can, for the joy of knowing. And this is not a bad thing, unless we become self-indulgent, collecting ideas and hoarding them rather than considering how we use that knowledge. The new moon in Gemini asks us what we are doing with the knowledge that we have and how we are using our voice. We may find ourselves considering right speech, an awareness of the power of words. In these days of information overload, so often we are talking at others rather than talking with them. For a genuine exchange of knowledge to happen, we need to be listening at least as much as we are speaking, and then taking the time to consider what we have heard before we react. Gemini asks us to look to our thought patterns, the ways of thinking that have become habit but may not accurately describe our world any more.
Jupiter in Sagittarius, the opposite sign to Gemini and the keeper of wisdom, forms several aspects to the outer planets this month, challenging us to connect with the bigger picture. There's an awkward connection with Uranus on June 7 which may highlight our need for freedom of thought and even a radical new way of seeing the world. With Uranus currently in Taurus, this may relate literally to how we understand our environment and the land that we walk upon. A week later on June 14, a more helpful aspect to Saturn brings the chance to ground our wisdom in reality and perhaps find a framework which helps us to clarify our beliefs. A couple of days later Jupiter squares mystical Neptune, dissolving boundaries and expanding our consciousness. If we've been working on the most superficial level of Gemini energy, playing with ideas but not processing what they mean, these aspects may be challenging.
Luckily, there is plenty of sensitive and receptive energy around to help us connect with our feelings and empathise with others. The day after the new moon, Mercury moves into Cancer, helping us to express our feelings and to consider how they are connected with our thoughts. On June 9 Venus moves into Gemini, upping the sociable, extrovert energy of that sign. Our ability to listen and receive information is enhanced and we may be more aware than usual of the feelings and experiences of those around us. I've always thought that the New Age assertion that "thoughts create reality" is too simplistic, but the combination of Venus in Gemini and Mercury in Cancer can show us how we focus our energy and what kind of energy we are open to receiving from others. This new understanding of the patterns and intersections of our thoughts and feelings helps us to see that Jupiterian bigger picture.
At the Solstice on June 21st, the Sun moves into Cancer and here in the northern hemisphere, we reach the peak point of solar energy. This brings the seeds of turning inwards towards the darker half of the year, with the feeling energy of Cancer shifting us to an awareness of the unconscious mind. Neptune turns retrograde the same day, a subtle influence connecting us more deeply to our dreams and visions. As the personal planets move through Cancer they meet with the North Node, highlighting what has become too comfortable and how we might move towards a new and more fulfilled version of ourselves. Mars meets the North Node on June 14, followed by Mercury on June 16 and we may find ourselves making connections and receiving new information around those dates which turn out to be more important than we might realise at the time.
Of course, as the Cancerian energy is activated, it connects with the outer planets in the opposite sign of Capricorn, challenging us to take ourselves and our growth more seriously. Mars opposes Saturn on 14 June and Pluto on 20 June, and Mercury opposes Saturn on June 16 and Pluto on June 19. We may find ourselves confronting our shadow, both personal and collective, around those dates. Around the same time, on June 18, Saturn meets Neptune in a helpful sextile, helping us to form flexible boundaries and take an imaginative approach to any obstacles we may be facing. On 23 June Saturn meets the South Node in Capricorn and there may be something from the past coming back to haunt us around that time. Saturn and Pluto can carry challenging and even dark energy, revealing insecurities or fears we had thought buried. We may find ourselves on the defensive, clinging to what is familiar and projecting our fears onto whoever or whatever we see as different from us. There's so much "them and us" thinking which still needs to be healed. If we choose to embrace our shadow, to use the lessons of Gemini in educating ourselves, we can consider the past a resource, with powerful lessons and insights about our present. As with anything in life, it's all about how we use the energy available to us.
