What I Learned in Astrology Class: Part Three
If you want the full story, here is part one and part two.
I did the final modules of my astrology course by correspondence, finding the one to one interaction with my tutor incredibly valuable. So my third great revelation was just me, sat in my study on my own, probably staring out of the window at the blue-tits in the bushes. Perhaps fitting that it was a solitary experience, as it involved Saturn. I had gone deeply enough into my natal chart by now to understand how strongly my Saturn (in Gemini in the fifth house) influenced me, and the way I acted in the world. My Saturn is part of a grand trine with Uranus in Libra and Jupiter in Aquarius, and conjunct my South Node in Gemini. It's also co-ruler of my chart, along with Uranus. But I didn't feel those connections went far enough to explain how overwhelming I found that Saturn energy, how it seemed to feed into everything I did, all of how I expressed myself.
Until I started studying midpoints. Midpoints are, as the name suggests, the midway point between two planets or angles in the chart. They are considered especially significant if they form hard aspects with other points in the chart. One of the most important midpoints is the Sun Moon midpoint, simply because those two energies are so fundamental to who we are. And which planet sits on my Sun Moon midpoint - Saturn of course. Adding a layer of fear to my attempts at self expression, building walls around my personal growth, holding back authentic communication and self expression.
And so the work began, because there is always work where Saturn is involved. Since that moment of insight, I've been working consciously to develop the helpful aspects of Saturn, self discipline, focus and mastery. Its a slow process, and sometimes it might seem like Saturn is where we run rings around ourselves, finding it hard to get off the treadmill. But Saturn rules the cycles of time, and its rewards tend to come, or perhaps to reveal themselves, over time.
But I'm hoping I'm making progress. The other day a close friend commented that I had been talking about Saturn for years (because Gemini is where we talk, right?!), but now I am talking about Uranus more, about freedom and authenticity instead of fear and obstacles. As well as often validating the ways we find ourselves acting or being, every planetary placement is a resource, and energy we have available to us in myriad layers of symbolism. If we are not expressing a particular aspect of ourselves very well, there is always a higher vibration, a deeper connection to be found. It can be hard work (especially where Saturn is involved!) but oh so rewarding. And this, for me, is the power of astrology, the way it gives us something to grasp, a tangible image, to investigate and work with consciously. Astrology tells us our own story, and then hands over the pen.
