Monthly Astro Forecast: New Moon in Cancer
Happening just a few days after the Solstice, the Cancer new Moon early on Saturday morning (UK time) is a good time to set our intentions for the next phase, as we begin the slow process of turning towards the dark here in the northern hemisphere. What creative projects will we begin to nurture in the coming months? How will we connect to our feelings and the cycles of our being? How do we care for ourselves and those close to us? The next few weeks might bring some awakenings as the personal planets move through Cancer and make challenging aspects to the outer planets currently transiting the cardinal signs (Pluto in Capricorn, Uranus in Aries and Jupiter in Libra). Those with strong cardinal energy in their charts will have been experiencing these transits for a while, so this Cancer lunation may bring a return to an ongoing process.
The new moon happens just before dawn, so Gemini is rising. The Sun, Moon and Mercury are all in Cancer in the first house, so this is an expressive and communicative lunation, giving us the opportunity to express our true selves. We may find it easier than usual to put our feelings into words, to allow ourselves to be a little bit vulnerable and share our emotions with others. Venus, at home in earthy Taurus, is hidden in the twelfth house, making a sharp aspect to the Moon and Sun, a push from our higher or spiritual self to create something, to manifest a dream. Venus also trines Pluto, helping us to dig for the talents we hide deep within ourselves.
Mars transiting through Cancer can bring our our defensive side, our urge to fight for those we love. Actions are triggered by feelings and we may need to be careful not to act hastily based on emotional reactions. These traits are exaggerated around June 25th as Mars squares expansive Jupiter, pushing us to stand up for our ideals and our beliefs. A time to beware of getting caught up in "them and us" thinking, as there is a risk of standing up for our own by excluding those we see as different to us. Mars's trine to diffuse Neptune the following day can add to our confusion, leaving us unsure how to act. On July 2nd, Mars opposes powerful Pluto in Capricorn, and we may see power struggles amongst the establishment, with everybody convince that there way is the only way to maintain security. Instead of grasping for power, better to consider how the structures around us need to be transformed, and focus our energy on making those changes. Mars square Uranus on July 18th might be another trigger point, a burst of energy bringing revolutionary change and the opportunity to stand up for what we believe in.
Meanwhile Mercury is not far behind, rushing ahead as ever. Mercury's square to Jupiter on June 27th brings lots of talking, ideas and ideals being hashed out, although we might be going round in circles, especially if we are not aware of the subconscious prejudices we bring to the debate. Communicating our emotions is good, but we need to keep an awareness of what fuels those emotions - is it fear or love? Mercury's opposition to Pluto on June 30th gives us a chance to dig deeper, to bring our hidden biases and insecurities into the light and share them, discuss them, learn from them. By the time Mercury reaches its square with Uranus on July 5th, we may have some exciting new ideas and possibilities to carry us forward. Time to pay attention to those flashes of inspiration, as our minds may be moving at the speed of light.
And then comes the Sun, following behind through the same series of aspects, illuminating the lessons of Mars and Mercury. The square to Jupiter is exact on July 6th, hopefully bringing some positive resolution to the challenges we face and a sense of expansion and growth. On July 10th, the Sun's opposition to Pluto is exact, helping us to find creative ways to transform our established ways of being and revealing what might need to change in the structures around us. The square to Uranus is exact on July 21st, and shows us a way forward, a new and even revolutionary path to soul growth and collective enlightenment.
Venus is still comfortable at home in Taurus, focusing our energy and creativity on the resources we have within and without. Her trine to Pluto on June 24th helps us to dig deep and consider what we truly value. Does our security come from material wealth and possessions, or is it something deeper? On July 1st, Venus makes a square to the nodal axis, newly arrived in Leo and Aquarius. We look to our meaningful connections, to what brings us pleasure and a sense of the familiar, but also what helps us to grow and challenge ourselves, and the relationships in our lives which support us in that process. On July 5th, Venus moves into Gemini, lightening up a little and ready for some good conversation and enjoyable new connections. A love of learning and sense of curiosity inspires us as we wrestle with the cardinal squares and oppositions discussed above. We might need to be careful not to run away into idealism and fantasy on July 17th, when Venus squares foggy Neptune. Romantic ideals are delightful, but we can get lost in them.
The outer planets themselves are fairly quiet this lunation, except for Chiron who stations retrograde on July 1st, beginning to apparently move backwards in the heavens. With Chiron retrograde, we take our woundedness within, and also our ability to heal. If Chiron impacts your chart strongly, its retrograde motion may precipitate a healing crisis, a chance to look within and begin to transform and release old wounds. Chiron's space is the liminal, the bridge between matter and spirit. Finding that space within ourselves is often the path to wholeness and healing.
And then we move into Leo season, beginning with speedy Mercury who moves into Leo on July 6th. We express ourselves creatively and let our ideas shine, wanting to be recognised for our intelligence and humour. Mars arrives on July 20th, bringing a burst of energy and fuelling our inner fires. We assert our individuality, but might need to be careful of an excess or pride or drama. The Sun comes home to Leo on July 22nd, and its time to let ourselves shine. Mercury conjuncts the north node the same day, opening the way for us to express our highest goals and make an intuitive leap into a better version of ourselves.
