Shining a light into the gathering flood

Tomorrow the Sun moves into Pisces, and we move away from the high thoughts of Aquarius into the watery depths of our feelings and imagination. The Sun shines a light as we swim through our emotions, visions and dreams, helping us to divine our higher purpose and to move beyond material concerns.

Of course, everybody knows their sun sign, from newspaper columns and popular astrology. And if you know even a little bit about astrology, you know that there is so much more to a birth chart than the sun sign. Most people live more through their rising sign, which explains how we meet the world, or the needs and comforts of their moon sign. But the Sun is central to the natal chart, just as it is central to our solar system. The energies of the other planets revolve around this great light, and indeed serve the Sun as their leader. The Sun is the giver of life, and the placement of our natal Sun shows us how and where we find our creative life force, our will to live. The Sun goes beyond survival (the will to survive is more Mars's domain) to give us our vitality, our reason for living. The natal Sun is often linked to the hero's journey, describing our quest in life. It is where we are going, not where we are coming from (which is symbolised by the natal Moon). The Sun shows what we are learning to be, and the placement and aspects it makes to the other planets show whether this comes easily to us or is more challenging.

In Pisces, the Sun makes for a compassionate and sensitive soul. As we've seen in relation to Chiron, Piscean energy is dissolving energy, moving towards the end of the zodiac cycle. So the problem for Sun in Pisces is being able to find a self to define, because how can the self be central when Pisces wants to move beyond the self? The Sun in Pisces puts imagination and intuition at the core of their being, and so might seem vague, impractical, disconnected from the day to day realities of life. But this apparent aimlessness disguises depths of compassion and a love for all beings - as the last sign of the Zodiac, Pisces contains a little bit of all the other signs, and so a way to understand and relate to them. A Pisces Sun being needs to learn to go with their own flow. When the Sun is in Pisces, we can all shine a light on our individuality, and then let it go, so that we can experience ourselves as a drop in the universal ocean. We can sacrifice the parts of ourselves that don't work any more, that don't feed our soul or nurture our quest. That way, when the Sun moves into Aries at the Spring Equinox in a few weeks time, we start the new astrological year with a clean slate and renewed intentions.
